Hello PPL.

here is solution for you all "how to get the skype camera to work".
it works with KDE/Gnome and so on.
this is script that you will run from the terminal as root.

now , copy this line to new doc and past.
then make the file executed - then click on the doc and run in terminal.

Code:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

2 things for you to know.
1- do not use it if you have open skype on your Desktop.
2 - the script will get the web cam that you have to work immediately with the opening of the skype software.
