The Unity based stuff has really been the only one I've had major problems like this with. I'm not prepared to blame something that has been working between PClinuxOS based, Ubuntu based, and Debian based (which all covers several distros), and Puppy before and after they went ubuntu based.
I guess I just won't worry about Tinyme/Unity stuff, it's not worth messing with, just wanted to see how it was.

Does this system by chance have a RAID controller?

I believe it does as part of the motherboard, but I'm not using it (only 1 sata harddrive).

Even if you do not use the RAID controller per se, its mere presence on the MB seems to cause this non-boot issue. The only answers I have found by googling always say to type "LiveCD" at the boot: prompt to continue booting... not sure why that don't work for booting from usb stick tho...
