TinyMe 2010 i586 RC 1 on Asus eeePC 900SD
Asus eeePC 900SD - 800MHz Celeron, 512MB RAM, 8GB SDD
I was delighted that it detected my WiFi chipset and allowed me to set that up. Most other lightweight distros don't do this well. However, after configuring the WiFi, Midori will not load (it did before that). In Configure your Computer, the mouse settings crashed. After, neither Midori nor Configure Computer, nor Package Manager will load. As a mater of fact, nothing seems to be loading... Logout doesn't even work. I installed to SDD, and the same results. It installed "fine" to the SSD though. __________________________ 1Life.Net 1World.ws CADoutsourcing.org inventiv.org PaprikaBikes.com NetbookOS.com |

RE: Asus eeePC 900SD - apps don't run
OK after a couple reboots, the above problems don't persist.
But Logout still doesn't work. Now Conky just closed itself - stopped running. I can't find where to change the default root user password root to something else. (I did find where to create a new user, but no place to change root pwd - was this left out or am I just too inexperienced to know something I should know?). __________________________ 1Life.Net 1World.ws CADoutsourcing.org inventiv.org PaprikaBikes.com NetbookOS.com |

RE: Asus eeePC 900SD - apps don't run
The applications stopped opening because your hostname (your computer's name) changed. Logging out and back in should fix the issue.
To change the root password, open a terminal and: [code] su #enter root password here passwd [code] It will prompt you to add in a new password. Note that that when you type in the password, it will not show anything back-- no asterisks, nothing. Please check the Release Announcement before reporting any issues! Please read the Usage Rules before posting! Check out the FAQ!

In the meantime I found where noobs like I have to go to fix that... - Configure your computer -- System --- Manage users on system ---- (Options: uncheck "filter system users" and password can be changed right there. I ran into an interesting bug today: Installed Chrome. If I grab the scroll bar, and scroll fast, the OS exits the WM and goes to a black screen with message at top: "Starting Display Manager (OK)" dark screen scrolls by and I'm greeted with a new Login screen - the thing just rebooted the session! Does this with many, or even just one, tab open. And another one: when I double-tap on the touchpad, it wouldn't launch any apps' shorcuts on the desktop, but now it worked for a couple of boots... and now it's not working again like before! What am I doing wrong? Is it because momentarily Configure your computer asked me for the root password that it started working? I tested this, by rebooting and loggin in as root, then reboot and log in as user, and double-tap worked again. But it won't necessarily continue working after restarts. What's going on? Logout still fails - it's like that menu item is dead... but power button will get it to shut down... however it does display a "Starting display manager (OK)" then "Starting Hal daemon (fail)" message before turning off. Not sure if we should care about that, but mentioning it in case it's a problem. Touchpad scrolling: also, I'd love to know where in the menus you can ask it to allow you to do either edge scrolling or double-finger scrolling with the touchpad. Thanks very much for all your help... and I hope my testing by a noob and feedback helps you guys too (towards making the best tiny distro out there). __________________________ 1Life.Net 1World.ws CADoutsourcing.org inventiv.org PaprikaBikes.com NetbookOS.com |

Good idea - basic good practices. OK, I updated. It still has the same problem (moving the scroll-bars in Chrome reboots the computer, and Midori won't run some websites like GMX.com).EDIT (coming back next day): double-tap on the scrollbar no longer has an effect, network does not connect (maybe after a couple of crashes like this, something went bad - either that or an update disabled it). Before, at least I could double tap to grab the scrollbar, even when a doubletap on a desktop shortcut would not launch it. Also, just to see if it shouldn't be Midori and GMX that should be slugging it out, I tested the version 0.2.6 of Midori on Mint9(ubuntu10.04)x64bit and it runs the GMX webmail just fine. On TinyMe2010 Midori won't go past GMX's login, it just hangs (unless I put in preferences to report it's an iphone... which creates problems with other sites). RE: TinyMe 2010 i586 RC 1 on Asus eeePC 900SD
I realize that a computer that reboots before you can save your work is the most useless of computers!
So I removed Chrome and installed Firefox instead. New element: I was using Midori, and went to MOVE the browser on the screen, a bit to the left, by grabbing the title bar, and the session rebooted! This is BAD... REAL BAD! This cannot be used in it's current state. Must be addressed in the most urgent of priorities. __________________________ 1Life.Net 1World.ws CADoutsourcing.org inventiv.org PaprikaBikes.com NetbookOS.com |

OK, that is too bad... because what I am reading between the lines, is that if your home computer works fine, TinyME is ready for the masses. I was trying to help out by reporting bugs... but your wording gives the impression you're just brushing it off as an isolated hardware problem and don't care or are too worn out to want to address it. Firefox is working fine, without the Midori/Chrome bug. I was only trying to help. I stuck with it beyond the point where it should have come off so I could help out. If you have already taken the decision that your own computer is the last word on what needs to be done, just let me know so I can put my time elsewhere, and just put peppermint back onto it. I'd have preferred to stay with this distro and was only enthusiastically trying to contribute. __________________________ 1Life.Net 1World.ws CADoutsourcing.org inventiv.org PaprikaBikes.com NetbookOS.com |

RE: TinyMe 2010 i586 RC 1 on Asus eeePC 900SD
No, it's just that any and all bug reports about TinyMe's latest release are pretty much moot. I've received so many reports of "this doesn't work in TinyMe, but it works in Unity" that I'm going to start over with the latest Unity release.
Please check the Release Announcement before reporting any issues! Please read the Usage Rules before posting! Check out the FAQ!
