tinyme top of the heap!
Hey TinyMe Forum! New member griennehornette here. I have to say tinyme rocks, after trying multiple lightweight distros on an old Dell Latitude (PII with 124RAM!). Several other distros - while all good distros - led me to hours of frustrating attempts to configure my way to a working laptop. All failed.

Or rather, I should say I failed. The distros may have been fine, but required a significantly more advanced user to handle the challenge. I'm quite happy to dive-in to attempting advanced stuff; but usually end-up botching it.

Enter tinyme. I actually downloaded and burned the 2008 iso a couple of years ago, and found the CD during a moment of frustration and despair with the latest failure this weekend. I still ended up having to do some command-line stuff (like reformating the hd with cfdisk) as the hd was borked by all my hacking, and tinyme at first couldn't recognize it.

After that, tinyme installed cheerfully, and had only minor issues to correctify.

Therefore, I proclaim it top of the lightweight division! For what it's worth ;-)

One problem I have not yet discovered the fix for - if anyone reads this and can comment - is the outdated repos. The CD was old, and Synaptic loads 2007 era repos. I get tons of errors when I try to reload, and no new packages are listed. I assume there is a way to add newer repos, I just haven't found it yet.

And I am a bit worried about messing up my now-working laptop! If I update the repos, I may manage to mess-up what is working. Hard to restrain myself though!

Anyway, that's my greeting message. Glad to be aboard.
griennehornette (aka Chris)

Um, yeah, I'm afraid the 2008 series just won't update, nor can you install anything to it. I would advise you to read the 2010 Release Announcement: http://tinymelinux.com/doku.php/latestrelease:test
and download it here:

RE: tinyme top of the heap!
I didn’t know that there was no way of updating the tinymce 2008 series or installing anything to it!! Does that we have to reinstall the whole thing with the 2010 release? That seems to be tough and just when I was getting quite comfortable with my tinymce!! Will have to check that one out!!

RE: tinyme top of the heap!
Sorry, are you sure you have the right forum? TinyMe and TinyMCE are two totally different things. http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/ is the place for TinyMCE. Yes, you will have to reinstall the next stable release of TinyMe (it won't be in 2010 at this point) when it come out.

Wink RE: tinyme top of the heap!
Hi, happy to finally have found a distro that speed up my job PC very much. I have tried several different distroes, no one really bad or slow, but always something that didn't work right. Mostly norwegian keyboard. i need those funny letters when i write emailsSmiling.
I also needed the flash plugin because I use maps in my work, and the site demand flash.
Tinyme fulfill all of my needs, and more too, so I'm very happy for all the work you have put in to this wonderful distro.
I use my job PC in my truck, on the road, so i need to use my cell phone to go online, this too works in Tinyme. And the speed is really fast.
My biggest problem was lack of memory, just 256 MB. I'm wondering if Tinyme will handle openoffice, haven't tried that yet.
Thanks anyway for all your good work so far.

I wouldn't try OpenOffice if I were you. Is there anything you need which AbiWord and Gnumeric don't offer?
