Convince me on going for TinyMe, lol
Hi all,

Well, the title is strange, but as you read you'll understand it:
Since a couple of months ago I switched almost completely from Windows to PCLinux, dragged by the idea of boosting the performance of my PC, which is a decent machine, but I alwasy want more. I'm happy with it but curisity drags me always to small lighweight systems, and since I'm happy with PCLOS I'm tempted to try MiniMe, TinyMe and DSL. The one I like more I'll try puting it in my parents's PC (if they decide for the change, lol), which I also happen to use everytime I visit them, and perhaps in my own one permanently.
Now, the KDE environment offers me what I need, a decent performance, support, and many useful applications, some of them not available (or at least not so "cooly" available) in Windows and that I find very useful (please don't ask me to write them all, my memory lasts only 5 minutes and then it goes away, like fishes). Is the new TinyMe 2010 based on PCLinux 2010 or at least any other PClinux distribution? I know it uses LXDE as a desktop, but how compatible is it with KDE apps and packages? Can I install any KDE app? In case I can, will it's performance go down by much? Will it be faster than KDE still? Which advantages do you think LXDE offers above KDE (in appearence they look similar to me)?. On a more technical side, which repos do you reccomend for me to select, specially the PCLinux ones since they are migrating now to 2010 version? PCLinux allows many times to use Mandriva, Fedora, Suse and RedHat rpms, does TinyMe have that capacity?. Mmm, to put it in other way, which compatibility problems may I expect software and hardware related?
I'm sorry if they are many questions and if they sound too newbie-like, but I just want to be on safe ground in case problems arise. If you think some questions can be answered giving other suggestions than the ones I ask, feel free to post them. In case it's useful to you, I don't look for eye-candy stuff but free RAM and CPU, as I study engineering I need the most of the time number crunching softwares and usually have more than 4 or five apps opened at the same time (the multidesktop thing is a blessing here), and occasionally I virtualize Windows because of some special 3D design softwares that don't have equivalent in Linux (yet...). My PC is AMD Sempron LE-1100 32bit, 2GB RAM, built-in NVidia Videocard.
Thank you very much in advance.

César

RE: Convince me on going for TinyMe, lol
For your AMD:
1. Download the following:
a. UBUNTU: http://mirrors.ccs.neu.edu/releases.ubun...-amd64.iso
b. PUPPY: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/dis...up-431.iso
c. UNITY: http://mirror.its.uidaho.edu/pub/unity/i...10-RC1.iso
2. Burn each to CD, creating Live CD's.
3. Try each. The UNITY appears to be close to TinyMe, without the annoying login screen.

Here is my personal quick test of an OS. For PUPPY, boot help and paste m00n.awardspace.co.uk Then press Enter. Boot the 2nd choice, type House into Search, hit go and enjoy a TV show. Check out UNITY & UBUNTU in an identical fashion. Choice is PUPPY for a swift work horse out and about the web. UBUNTU is a giant, where I can free install thousands of specialty quality applications. Later, look into Viper, Macpup & Super OS to compare with PCLOS, which remains one of my favorites. I still prefer the 2007 PCLOS for a wired computer. This computer summery:

Computer:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Service Pack -
DirectX 4.08.01.0810 (DirectX 8.1)

Input:

USB Device Sagem XG703 USB 802.11g

The junk LCD monitor gives me "Out of Range" on 2010 PCLOS live CD's regardless of the desktop version. FYI my DOB is 1930. Regards, Frog

RE: Convince me on going for TinyMe, lol
TinyMe is based on Unity, not PCLinuxOS. All the repos you need should be already selected in Smart.

As for adding in KDE, you can do that, but I can't tell you what the performance difference will be.

Please check the Release Announcement before reporting any issues!
Please read the Usage Rules before posting!
