No internet
For some reason I cant get internet. I went through the moves in the setup area, but no luck. Evey other distro I have used was hooked up as soon as it booted. I have dsl, so it should be able to see it. Can't figure this one out. I must have tried just about every distro there is by now, and I have always been able to get the network up and running quickly, but I can't make it happen here. I have a Compaq EVO 510 ssf with 1.6 ghz processor, and 512 mb of ram, and it picks up my ehternet card just fine, just doesnt connect through it. puzzeling.

I still don't know what is wrong, but I tried again, and it shows me to be connected, and even shows the IP address o the screen at the top right where all the information is showing, but the browser wont connect to google, and no updates on the software installer, so I am totally confused. On reboot, I did see where it said "failed" to connect to HAL. Is that the problem? I like to looks of it, just cant use it.

RE: No internet
No, hal should not be affecting you (in fact the hal fail message is due to hal starting twice (and the second launch failing since it's already running)). If hal wasn't running you would not have keyboard or mouse support.

Can you check in the control center > hardware to see what kernel module you card uses?

I attempted to do as you asked, but I get as far as "loading please wait", then the screen reverts back to where I was when I clicked on "hardware" in the control center. This is my hardware address from the system I m on now - 00:08:02:1D:17:30
And the driver is listed as- E100 whatever that means. I cant find any location on this system that tells the kernel module information. Sorry I can't be of more help.
This is the IP address shown at the top right of the screen where all the information is shown- 192.168.1.64.
This is the same IP address shown on the system I am using now as well.

RE: No internet
can you open a terminal and su to root. Then type:

lspci -v

Please post the result.

It's odd that the control panel bails out on hardware detection. What happens when you try to check your graphic details in the control center? Does it bail out too?

RE: No internet
ok, I figured out the problem.

KD, you rebuilt the drakxtools on the BS? This package is VERY specific and cannot currently be built on the BS. It picks up the host architecture so as the BS is 64bit, the 32bit package believes itself to be a 64bit package.

This affects /usr/share/harddrake/service_harddrake which is used for hardware detection. This explains why one other user got an issue with his display size as what happens is basically service_harddrake segfaults during the video setup (so the rest of the detection does not take place).

Can you rebuild the 32bit version of drakxtools on a 32bit system and upload it to the server?

Did you mean this reply to this thread? If so, you lost me way back at the start. I am simply running the "live cd" when having my problems, and I haven't rebuilt anything to my knowledge. Either this was meant for another thread, or I am totally lost now. lol

I went back and opened the control center, and I can go anywhere, and look at anything with the one exception of the hardware section. That is the only place it bails out back to the first screen.

RE: No internet
I brought the disk home to my Compaq here, and it is an AMD64 processor, and I am posting this via the disk running on it, so it works here, but not at the work pc. I had no problem hooking up to the internet here. This pc is nwer, and has more ram so it works well here, but the one at work is somewhat older with less ram, that is why I was looking at TinyMe to use there for more speed.

I try and learn something new everyday, and I then try and put it to good use.

RE: No internet
This was a reminder for KDulcimer to update the package as I cannot for a short while. Can you check if ipv6 is enabled (it's an option for your connection in the control center)?
