X over SSH

X over SSH
I've been using an older machine as a Remote Access Gateway for some time.

Decided to try to do the same using Droplet hoping it would work better than W2K/Cygwin.

Have PuTTY and Xming set up on my XP boxes.

Am able to login and get a console prompt.

I can VNC and RDP to other machines once connected.

However, I've had no luck getting a desktop on the local system.

Have tried X11vnc, vncserver, and NXserver without success.

Any suggestions on what would be the "best" approach?

I'm concerned that I've damaged the distro by installing too many items from the main PCLinuxOS repo.
