abiword install left system unusable?
Hi,

I've been looking for a distro to run my old 128MB, 300MHz Pentium II laptop.
I recently took TinyMe 2008 for a spin and was very impressed at how it performs (in VMWare; I haven't tried it yet on the laptop).  I installed Opera using Synaptic; that turned out just fine...I was surfing in a few seconds.  Then I installed Abiword, but at the end of the install, there was a bunch of text in the Synaptic window that I scrolled through but didn't know what it meant.  Kind of looked like an error dump with hex codes and stuff near the bottom of the text.  I ignored it and clicked close.  If I remember right, the system still worked fine at that point.  A short time later, I was clicking around and then noticed all the desktop icons and bottom panel were gone.  Right clicking still brings up a menu, but as soon as I choose any item in the menu (like, xterm for instance), a new windows appears for about 1/4 of a second and then disappears...and the item I choose doesn't execute.  As you can imagine, I can't do anything with the system in this state.  Several reboots didn't fix the problem.  Uninstalling Abiword in single user mode didn't help either.  What did I goof up? A reinstall is no big deal, since it's on VMWare, but was this just a silly glitch with Abiword or am I going to have the same problem if I try to install it again on VMWare after I do a reinstall, or am I going to have this problem on the laptop too?
Thoughts?
Kevin

Re: abiword install left system unusable?
The current version is broken against the pclos repo, that's why it was pulled from the servers and people are advised to wait for the new release.  We are in the process to create our own repo with a fully updated tinyme.  The tinyme09 release should happen very soon

Re: abiword install left system unusable?
thanks, I'll likely wait for the 09 version.  Or is it possible to upgrade from 08 to 09 when 09 is available?  i.e. similar to how Ubuntu allows major version upgrades?

Is there a link to a bug report that describes the problem?

I'm afraid not, as we'll be moving to a new base. (Which, of course, means that all your base will belong to us!)

Please check the Release Announcement before reporting any issues!
Please read the Usage Rules before posting!
Check out the FAQ!
