Challenging install -- can't boot from CD
I REALLY like TinyME, I really want to use it but it's such a pain to install.  I installed in on a Dell laptop and grew to love it.  I tried unsuccessfully to install it on an old Compaq Armada, never worked, ended up with Puppy working flawlessly.  I have a stack of old  Digital Celebris GlL 6180 computers and pulled one to see if it worked well with Linux.  For some reason none of the 10  or 12 versions of Linux will run form the CD even though it does boot from CD supposedly.  These are OLD and have Pentium Pro processors running a 200mhz.  Decent amount of memory so all should be good.  Right?

Wrong.  I get the same error I got on my Compaq laptop.  The computer is running Win 2000 fine, but slow.  It's got an 8G HD partitioned.  I formatted a 2G partition  FAT32 for the Linux install and downloaded the ISO there.  Copied the vmlinux and itird.gz out to c:\boot with  a GRUB loader to get it to install.  Every time I get the error "Unable to mount the livecd  Dropping you to limited shell."  This happens AFTER it runs through various checks and just after the line :"Searching for the loop image" and a listing of the hd's.

This is not a problem with a bad CD burn like I was told a while back as a reason the Compaq failed, this is running direct from the hard drive.  BTW I tried this same procedure on the Compaq with similar results.

Toss me a bone here, I really don't want to use Puppy, but it looks like I'm headed that way.  I need a workable alternative ---please!

Re: Challenging install -- can't boot from CD
Just guessing here, that looks like what they call a poor mans install?  Live-cd from the hard drive?  Never done that myself, but this looks familiar:
Quote:"Searching for the loop image"

Did you try booting that with the noscsi option in the boot codes?  Reason I ask, is cause one of my older computer required that boot code, else I got that same message.  Other than that, I don't have a clue.

Hi there,

I had the same problem with my Sony sr17 (pentium 3, 128 MB, 20GB, no cd).

You just need to copy "lifecd.sqfs" to the same partition you are booting from.
Also, since this laptos are old, you probably will want to use the "acpi=off" in the vmlinuz line

Good luck!

GREAT!  THANKS!  After many hours pounding my head against the wall with your suggestion it worked!  This should be made part of a sticky for many others who have faced this same problem.  ;D ;D ;D

Re: Challenging install -- can't boot from CD
Well, I think I agree.  Unless the "Head Honcho" disagrees, here it is.

But I don't have the final say.  This may be temporary.
